For instance, sit a while and enjoy a picnic lunch at Poll an Eas waterfall – not an ass in site, only the sound of water gurgling through the pebbles and the birds singing. How about exploring the “Fairy Hill” steeped in legend. Find out about the stories of fairies having a massive battle between the hills of Sheemore and Sheebeg, hills made famous in a tune by Turlough O Carolan, the blind harper that wandered the lands of Leitrim in the 18th Century. Learn about the other legends of the area and the antics of Fionn Mac Cubhail.
If you are feeling really energetic you can cycle in the path of legends as you cross over Sliabh Aneirin the home of Tuatha De Danann. They were reputedly a race of small dark people who fled into the more inaccessible regions of the country. It is supposedly from these battle shy little people that the myth of fairies and leprechauns emanated.
Now if this hasn’t whet your appetite for a cycle trip in Leitrim on a high spec, comfort built German manufactured electric bike (Kalkhoff brand) let me describe a perfect day out in Leitrim:
· After a hearty Irish Breakfast in the Lough Allen Hotel, on the shores of Lough Allen you get into your comfortable clothes and walking shoes. Bring along a hat, scarf, gloves and a rain jacket, just in case… we don’t really have bad weather in Ireland, we just never seem to dress appropriate for it. So you make your way to Leitrim Village only 6km from the hotel where you pick up your electric bicycle – Seamus or Eileen form Electric Bike Trails will get you sorted out with all the gear you need, the right size bike, safety helmet, hi vis vest, pannier bag and a lock for the bike. You will be given a self-guide map of your route and the details of it will be discussed so as you are fully happy with the route, the best places to get refreshments and of course how to operate the bike – it’s really very simple as the bikes operate just like a normal bike with a push button for battery assist as you need it. The Sheemore Trail is a 17km cycle around the foot of the “fairy hill” and on into Carrick on Shannon. You will be cycling on a quiet country road for the majority of the trip with views of the many hills of Leitrim and in particular Sliabh Anierin. When you get close to the foot of Sheemore Hill you will notice a well-worn path up to the summit where 3 large metholitic tombs and a crucifix are located. A spectacular 360 degree view over the surrounding area makes this easy climb even more rewarding if you feel up to it. Its back on the bike again and it’s an easy cycle into Carrick on Shannon where there are cycle lanes and a number of bike shelters to lock up the bike. Here there are lots of coffee shops, restaurants and many tourist attractions. Having worked up a thirst you might like to go to Flynn’s Traditional Bar on the corner of Bridge St and Main St for a pint of Guinness or a beverage of your choice before lunch. Stop off to explore the Costello Chapel next door (one of the smallest churches in the world). After a delicious light lunch in a popular restaurant a guided Historical Walking Tour of the town can be arranged by contacting Tommy at 083 3329942. Its then back to base on the bicycle taking the back road to avoid the traffic. You will arrive back at your hotel in time to have a relaxing Hot Stone Full Body Massage in the Oshadi Spa. Enjoy a scrumptious dinner in the Rushes Restaurant before you finish off the day with a night cap or two on the veranda off the bar area overlooking Lough Allen and watch the sun setting on a memorable day in Leitrim.
Now that should entice you for some more sightseeing and exploring in Leitrim and once you get to experience the genuine hospitality of the local people I have no doubt you will be back time and time again!
Electric Bike Trails is a relatively new bike hire business opened in Leitrim Village in July 2012. We use Kalkhoff Electric Bikes that have been tried and tested on the hills and mountains in our area. With cycling and getting out into the countryside an ever increasing pastime it is not surprising that more and more electric bike businesses are starting up in Ireland. Kalkhoff electric bike hire is now available in Westport, Dublin, Clare, Louth, Donegal, Cork, Galway and of course Leitrim. Other locations are planned and it is the intension of our Kalkhoff dealer to have a network of Kalkhoff bike hire bases throughout Ireland to facilitate the avid sightseers and long tour market, especially along the recently launched Wild Atlantic Way.
Electric Bike Trails have opened a base at Lough Key Forest and Activity Park, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Here, there is up to 8 km of traffic free cycling. This option is a very popular, fun activity for families. We have a large range of kids bikes, child carts, tag along bikes and child seats available for hire to cater for all family requirements. We also have a tandem which is great fun to cycle and caters for people who are visually impaired. Bike hire in the park provides an essential link to Boyle Town for all the tourists and in particular for the patrons the 50 birth marina and the Caravan and Camping Park. Fans of the very popular Moone Boy Comedy Series will be able to cycle the Moone Boy Trail and download an app to view the scene at each location from the series.
Electric Bike Trails vision for the future is to provide a quality bike rental and tour operation that will provide the long tour enthusiast the facility to cycle their way through all of County Leitrim to the sea at Tullaghan with quality accommodation provided along the way. There are so many more hidden gems to explore, to mention but a few such as “the black pigs dike” and the “Dawn of Hope” Now we all need to get there!!!
